Call to Worship

While making the sign of the cross:

God, come to our assistance.
Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Phos Hilaron, “O Radiant Light” (1)

O radiant light,
O Sun divine

of God the Father’s deathless face,

O image of the light sublime,

That fills the heav’nly dwelling place.

O Son of God,
the source of life,

Praise is your due by night and day,

Our happy lips must raise the strain

of your esteemed and splendid name.

Lord, Jesus Christ
as daylight fades,

as shines the light of eventide,

We praise the Father with the Son,

the Spirit blest, and with them one.other of God.

PSALMODY

Psalm 141:1-9

Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

Lord, I am calling: hasten to help me.
Listen to me as I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

Lord, set a guard at my mouth,
keep watch at the gate of my lips.
Let my heart not turn to things that are wrong,
to sharing the evil deeds done by the sinful.
No, I will never taste their delights.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

The good may reprove me,
In kindness chastise me,
but the wicked shall never anoint my head.
Every day, I counter their malice with prayer.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

To you, Lord my God, my eyes are turned:
In you I take refuge; do not forsake me.
Keep me safe from the traps they have set for me,
from the snares of those who do evil.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

Praise to the Father, praise to the Son,
all praise to the life giving Spirit.
As it was, is now, and shall always be
for ages unending. Amen.

Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.

Psalm Prayer

Lord,
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
your name is worthy of all praise.
Let our prayer come like incense before you.
May the lifting up of our hands
be as an evening sacrifice
acceptable to you,
Lord, our God.

Psalm 112

Ant. The Lord said to Elijah: Go and present yourself to Ahab; I will send rain upon the earth.

Happy the ones who fear the Lord,
who take delight in all God’s commands.
Their children will be powerful on earth;
the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in their house;
Their justice stands firm for ever.
They are a light in the darkness for the upright:
They are generous, merciful, and just.

The good take pity and lend,
They conduct their affairs with honor.
The just will never waver:
They will be remembered for ever.

They have no fear of evil news;
with a firm heart, they trust in the Lord.
With a steadfast heart, they will not fear;
they will see the downfall of their foes.

Open-handed, they give to the poor;
Their justice stands firm for ever.
Their head will be raised in glory.

The wicked see and are angry,
grind their teeth and fade away,
the desire of the wicked leads to doom.

Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen

Ant. The Lord said to Elijah: Go and present yourself to Ahab; I will send rain upon the earth.

Canticle
Revelation 15:3-4

Ant. Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha saw him no more.

Mighty and wonderful are your works, Lord God Almighty!
Righteous and true are your ways, O King of the nations!

Who would dare refuse you honor
or the glory due your name, O Lord?

Since you alone are holy, all nations shall come and worship in your presence.
Your mighty deeds are clearly seen.

Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen.

Ant. Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha saw him no more.

Reading

A Reading from the second book of Kings
(2 Kings 2:11-12)

As Elijah and Elisha still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and cried, 'My father, my father! the chariot of Israel and its horseman!' And Elisha saw Elijah no more.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.

Responsory

Elisha lifted the cloak of Elijah: he struck the waters and they divided.
Elisha lifted the cloak of Elijah: he struck the waters and they divided.
Because the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha:
he struck the waters and they divided.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Elisha lifted the cloak of Elijah: he struck the waters and they divided.

Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Mary

The Magnificat (3)
Luke 1:46-55
Ant. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the day of the Lord comes, that great and terrible day. He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents.

While making the sign of the cross:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit sings to God, my saving God,
Who on this day, above all others, favored me
And raised me up, a light for all to see.

Through me, great deeds will God make manifest
And all the earth will come to call me blest.
Unbounded love and mercy sure will I proclaim
For all who know and praise God’s holy name.

God’s mighty arm, protector of the just,
Will guard the weak and raise them from the dust.
But mighty kings will swiftly fall from thrones corrupt.
The strong brought low, the lowly lifted up.

Soon will the poor and hungry of the earth
Be richly blest, be given greater worth.
And Israel, as once foretold to Abraham,
Will live in peace throughout the promised land.

All glory be to God, Creator blest,
To Jesus Christ, God’s love made manifest,
And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter,
All glory be, both now and evermore.

Ant. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the day of the Lord comes, that great and terrible day. He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents.

Intercessions

Let us give joyful praise to the living and true God, who chose the prophet Elijah to proclaim power and mercy; let us sing to God:
O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

Lord, you accepted the sacrifice of Elijah and consumed it with fire from heaven; accept our evening sacrifice which we offer for the good of the Church.
O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

When Elijah prayed on the mountain, you sent saving rain from heaven; fill us who have been called to Carmel with a spirit of prayer so that we may draw a shower of grace to the world.
O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

You gave to the prophet Elijah the ministry of reconciling parents and children; make us workers for peace so that the peace of Christ may reign in the world.
O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

You made Elijah the defender of your honor and of true worship; increase our concern for justice so that by giving you all that is your due, we may serve our brothers and sisters in the spirit of the Gospel.
O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers, that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.

Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.

O God, hear us; hear our prayer.

You took the prophet Elijah to yourself in a whirlwind of fire; graciously admit our departed brothers and sisters into the embrace of your glory.
O God, hear us; hear our prayer. (4)

The Lord’s Prayer

And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

Closing Prayer

Almighty, ever-living God,
Your prophet Elijah, our Father,
lived always in your presence
and was zealous for the honor
due to your name.
May we, your servants, always seek your face and bear witness to your love.
We ask this through our Lord,
Jesus Christ, your Son
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Blessing

While making the sign of the cross:

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
