Call to Worship

While making the sign of the cross:

God, come to our assistance.
Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

They’ll Know we are Christians
by Our Love (2)

We are one in the Spirit,
we are one in the Lord;
We are one in the Spirit,
we are one in the Lord;
And we pray that all unity
will one day be restored.

And they'll know we are Christians by our love,
by our love,
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other,
we will walk hand in hand;
We will walk with each other,
we will walk hand in hand;
And together we'll spread the news
that God is in our land.

And they'll know we are Christians by our love,
by our love,
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.

We will work with each other,
we will work side by side;
We will work with each other,
we will work side by side;
And we'll guard each one’s dignity
and save each one’s pride.

And they'll know we are Christians by our love,
by our love,
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.

All praise to the Father,
from whom all things come;
And all praise to Christ Jesus,
His only Son.
And all praise to the Spirit
who makes us one.

And they'll know we are Christians by our love,
by our love,
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.

PSALMODY

Psalm 141:1-9

Ant. Like burning incense, O Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.

I have called to you, O Lord; hasten to help me!
Hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer arise before you like incense,
the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips!
Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,
to evil deeds with those who are sinners.

Never allow me to share in their feasting.
If the good strike or reprove me, it is kindness;
but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.
Let my prayer be ever against their malice.

Their princes were thrown down by the side of the rock:
Then, they understood that my words were kind.
As a millstone is shattered to pieces on the ground,
so their bones were strewn at the mouth of the grave.

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:
In you, I take refuge; spare my soul!
From the trap they have laid for me, keep me safe:
keep me from the snares of those who do evil.

Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen

Ant. Like burning incense, O Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.

Psalm Prayer

Lord,
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
your name is worthy of all praise.
Let our prayer come like incense before you.
May the lifting up of our hands
be as an evening sacrifice
acceptable to you,
Lord, our God.

Psalm 112

Ant.Happy those who show mercy for the Lord’s sake; they will stand firm for ever.

Happy the ones who fear the Lord,
who take delight in all God’s commands.
Their children will be powerful on earth;
the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in their house;
their justice stands firm forever.
They are a light in the darkness for the upright;
they are generous, merciful and just.

The good take pity and lend;
they conduct their affairs with honor.
The just will never waver:
they will be remembered forever.

They have no fear of evil news;
with a firm heart they trust in the Lord.
With a steadfast heart they will not fear;
they will see the downfall of their foes.

Open-handed they give to the poor;
their justice stands firm forever.
Their head will be raised in glory.

The wicked see and are angry,
grind their teeth and fade away;
the desire of the wicked leads to doom.

Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen

Ant.Happy those who show mercy for the Lord’s sake; they will stand firm for ever.

Canticle
Canticle — 1 Peter 2:21-24

Ant. Those things, which God foretold through the prophets concerning the sufferings that Christ would endure, have been fulfilled.

Christ suffered for you
and left you an example
to have you follow in his footsteps.

He did no wrong;
no deceit was found in his mouth.
When he was insulted,
he returned no insult.

When he was made to suffer,
he did not counter with threats.
Instead, he delivered himself up
to the One who judges justly.

In his own body,
he brought your sins to the cross
so that all of us, dead to sin,
could live in accord with God’s will.

By his wounds, you were healed.

Ant. Those things, which God foretold through the prophets concerning the sufferings that Christ would endure, have been fulfilled.

Reading

A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians
(1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

While all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, the award goes to one person. In that case, run so as to win! Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable. I do not run like one who loses sight of the finish line. I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. What I do is discipline my own body and master it, for fear that after having preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.

Responsory

Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Christ Jesus, hear our humble petitions,
for we have sinned against you.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.

Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Mary

Luke 1:46-55
Ant.
My son, you have been with me all the time, and everything I have is yours. But we had to feast and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost to us and now has been found.

While making the sign of the cross:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for God has looked with favor on this lowly servant.

From this day, all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is God’s Name.

God has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
God has shown the strength of his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.

God has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things
and has sent the rich away empty.

God has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for God has remembered the promise of mercy,
the promise made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children forever.

Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen.

Ant. My son, you have been with me all the time, and everything I have is yours. But we had to feast and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost to us and now has been found.

Intercessions

Let us give thanks continually to Christ, our teacher, and our head, who came to serve and to do good to all. In humility and confidence, let us ask him:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

Lord, be present to the bishops and priests of your Church, who share your role as head and shepherd. May they lead your people to the Father under your guidance.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

May your angel be with all who travel, to keep them safe in soul and body.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

Teach us to serve the needs of others and to be like you, who came to serve, not to be served.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

Grant that in the human family, all of us will help each other as sisters and brothers, so that, with your assistance, it may be a city compact and strong.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers, that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.

Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.

Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.

Have mercy on all the dead. Bring them to the vision of your glory.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy. (2)

The Lord’s Prayer

And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

Closing Prayer

Father of peace,
We are joyful in your Word, your Son Jesus Christ, who reconciles us to you. Let us hasten towards Easter with the eagerness of faith and love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Blessing

While making the sign of the cross:

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
