Call to Worship
While making the sign of the cross:
God, come to our assistance.
Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!
Hymn
Lift High the Cross (1)
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim,
’til all the world
adore his sacred name.
Led on the way, by this triumphant sign,
The hosts of God in conquering ranks combine.
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim,
’til all the world
adore his sacred name.
Each newborn servant of the Crucified,
Bears on the brow the seal of him who died.
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim,
’til all the world
adore his sacred name.
O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,
As thou hast promised, draw the world to thee.
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim,
'till all the world
adore his sacred name.
So shall our song of triumph ever be,
Praise to the crucified for victory!
Lift high the cross,
the love of Christ proclaim,
’til all the world
adore his sacred name.
PSALMODY
Psalm 141:1-9
Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Lord, I am calling: hasten to help me.
Listen to me as I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Lord, set a guard at my mouth,
keep watch at the gate of my lips.
Let my heart not turn to things that are wrong,
to sharing the evil deeds done by the sinful.
No, I will never taste their delights.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
The good may reprove me,
In kindness chastise me,
but the wicked shall never anoint my head.
Every day, I counter their malice with prayer.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
To you, Lord my God, my eyes are turned:
In you I take refuge; do not forsake me.
Keep me safe from the traps they have set for me,
from the snares of those who do evil.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Praise to the Father, praise to the Son,
all praise to the life giving Spirit.
As it was, is now, and shall always be
for ages unending. Amen.
Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering. (2)
Psalm Prayer
Lord,
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
your name is worthy of all praise.
Let our prayer come like incense before you.
May the lifting up of our hands
be as an evening sacrifice
acceptable to you,
Lord, our God.
Psalm 110
Ant. What a great work of charity! Death itself died when life was slain on the tree.
The Lord’s revelation to my Master:
”Sit on my right:
your foes I will put beneath your feet.”
The Lord will wield from Zion
your scepter of power:
rule in the midst of all your foes.
A prince from the day of your birth
on the holy mountains
from the womb before the dawn I begot you.
The Lord has sworn an oath he will not change.
”You are a priest for ever,
a priest like Melchizedek of old.”
The Master standing at your right hand
will shatter kings in the day of his great wrath.
He shall drink from the stream by the wayside
and therefore he shall lift up his head.
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen
Ant. What a great work of charity! Death itself died when life was slain on the tree.
Canticle
Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10, 12C
Ant. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, for by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
O Lord our God, you are worthy
to receive glory and honor and power.
For you have created all things;
by your will, they came to be and were made.
Worthy are you, O Lord,
to receive the scroll and break open its seals.
For you were slain;
and with your blood, you purchased for God
those of every race and tongue,
of every people and nation.
You made them a kingdom and priests
to serve our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
to receive power and riches,
Wisdom and strength,
honor and glory and praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen.
Ant. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, for by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world.
Reading
A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians
(I Corinthians 15:23-24 )
We preach Christ crucified — a stumbling block to Jews and an absurdity to Gentiles; but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.
Responsory
O glorious cross, on you the King of angels was victorious.
O glorious cross, on you the King of angels was victorious.
And he has washed away our sins in his own blood.
On you, the King of angels was victorious.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
O glorious cross, on you the King of angels was victorious.
Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Mary
The Magnificat (3)
Luke 1:46-55
Ant. O cross, you are the glorious sign of our victory. Through your power, may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.
While making the sign of the cross:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit sings to God, my saving God,
Who on this day above all others favored me
And raised me up, a light for all to see.
Through me great deeds will God make manifest
And all the earth will come to call me blest.
Unbounded love and mercy sure will I proclaim
For all who know and praise God’s holy name.
God’s mighty arm, protector of the just,
Will guard the weak and raise them from the dust.
But mighty kings will swiftly fall from thrones corrupt.
The strong brought low, the lowly lifted up.
Soon will the poor and hungry of the earth
Be richly blest, be given greater worth.
And Israel, as once foretold to Abraham,
Will live in peace throughout the promised land.
All glory be to God, Creator blest,
To Jesus Christ, God’s love made manifest,
And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter,
All glory be, both now and evermore.
Ant. O cross, you are the glorious sign of our victory. Through your power, may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.
Intercessions
Let us pray with confidence to Christ, who endured the cross to save us:
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
O Christ, you emptied yourself, taking the form of a servant and being made like us. Grant that your people may follow the example of your humility.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
O Christ, you humbled yourself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross, grant that your servants may imitate your obedience and willing acceptance of trials.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
O Christ, you were raised up by the Father and given the name that is above all other names. May your people, strengthened in the hope of a heavenly resurrection, persevere to the end.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
O Christ, at your name every knee in heaven, on earth, and under the earth will bend in adoration. Pour out your love upon all people that they may join together in proclaiming your glory.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers, that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.
Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer.
O Christ, every tongue shall confess that you are Lord to the glory of God the Father. Welcome our sisters and brothers who have died into the unfailing joy of your kingdom.
Miserere nobis. Miserere nobis. Lord, hear our prayer. (4)
The Lord’s Prayer
And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
Closing Prayer
God our Father,
in obedience to you
your only Son accepted death on the cross
for the salvation of humanity.
We acknowledge the mystery
of the cross on earth.
May we receive the gift
of redemption in heaven.
We ask this through
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Blessing
While making the sign of the cross:
May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Salve Regina (5)
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
Pray for us.
Sant’Angelo,
Pray for us.
Let us spend this evening in peace.
Thanks be to God.
