Call to Worship
While making the sign of the cross:
God, come to our assistance.
Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!
Hymn
God of Day and God of Darkness (1)
God of day and God of darkness,
now we stand before the night;
As the shadows stretch and deepen,
come and make our darkness bright.
All creation still is groaning
for the dawning of your might;
When the Sun of peace and justice
fills the earth with radiant light.
Still, the nations curse the darkness,
still, the rich oppress the poor:
Still, the earth is bruised and broken
by the ones who still want more.
Come and wake us from our sleeping,
so our hearts cannot ignore
All your people lost and broken,
all your children at our door.
Show us Christ in one another,
Make us servants strong and true.
Give us all your love of justice
So we do what you would do.
Let us call all people holy,
Let us pledge our lives anew,
Make us one with all the lowly,
Let us all be one in you.
You shall be the path that guides us,
You, the light that in us burns;
Shining deep within all people,
Yours the love that we must learn,
For our hearts shall wander restless
'Til they safe to you return;
Finding you in one another,
We shall all your face discern.
Praise to you in day and darkness,
you, our source, and you, our end;
Praise to you who loves and nurtures us
like father, mother, friend;
Grant us all a peaceful resting,
let each mind and body mend,
So we rise refreshed tomorrow,
hearts renewed to kingdom tend.
PSALMODY
Psalm 141:1-9
Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense, my hands like an evening offering.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Lord, I am calling: hasten to help me.
Listen to me as I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Lord, set a guard at my mouth,
keep watch at the gate of my lips.
Let my heart not turn to things that are wrong,
to sharing the evil deeds done by the sinful.
No, I will never taste their delights.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
The good may reprove me,
In kindness chastise me,
but the wicked shall never anoint my head.
Every day, I counter their malice with prayer.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
To you, Lord my God, my eyes are turned:
In you I take refuge; do not forsake me.
Keep me safe from the traps they have set for me,
from the snares of those who do evil.
O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like
incense, my hands like an evening offering.
Praise to the Father, praise to the Son,
all praise to the life giving Spirit.
As it was, is now, and shall always be
for ages unending. Amen.
Ant. O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense, my hands like an evening offering. (2)
Psalm Prayer
Lord,
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
your name is worthy of all praise.
Let our prayer come like incense before you.
May the lifting up of our hands
be as an evening sacrifice
acceptable to you,
Lord, our God.
Psalm 111
Ant. Our compassionate Lord has left us a memorial of his wonderful work, alleluia.
With my whole heart
I praise the lord among the just.
Great are God’s works,
a delight to explore.
In splendor, in majesty,
God’s justice will stand.
Who can forget God’s wonders!
a God, merciful and kind
who nourished the faithful,
upheld the covenant,
and revealed mighty deeds,
giving them the land of pagans.
Faithful, just, and true
are all God’s decrees:
each law in its place,
valid for ever.
The Lord redeems the faithful,
decrees a lasting covenant.
Holy and awesome God’s name!
Fear of the Lord is wisdom’s crown,
wise are those who live by it.
Praise the Lord for ever!
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen
Ant. Our compassionate Lord has left us a memorial of his wonderful work, alleluia.
Canticle
Revelation 19:1-7
Ant. All power is yours, Lord God, our mighty King, alleluia.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Salvation, glory, and power to our God, whose judgments are honest and true.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Sing praise to our God, all you God’s servants, all who worship God reverently, great and small.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
The Lord, our all-powerful God, is King; let us rejoice, sing praise, and give God glory.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
The wedding feast of the Lamb has begun, and His bride is prepared to welcome Him.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Ant. All power is yours, Lord God, our mighty King, alleluia.
Reading
A Reading from the First Letter of St. Peter
(1 Peter 1:3-5)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. In this, you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.
Responsory
The whole creation proclaims the greatness of your glory.
The whole creation proclaims the greatness of your glory.
Eternal ages praise
the greatness of your glory.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
The whole creation proclaims the greatness of your glory.
Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Mary
The Magnificat (3)
Luke 1:46-55
Ant. Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus said to him: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart.
While making the sign of the cross:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit sings to God, my saving God,
Who on this day, above all others, favored me
And raised me up, a light for all to see.
Through me, great deeds will God make manifest
And all the earth will come to call me blest.
Unbounded love and mercy sure will I proclaim
For all who know and praise God’s holy name.
God’s mighty arm, protector of the just,
Will guard the weak and raise them from the dust.
But mighty kings will swiftly fall from thrones corrupt.
The strong brought low, the lowly lifted up.
Soon will the poor and hungry of the earth
Be richly blest, be given greater worth.
And Israel, as once foretold to Abraham,
Will live in peace throughout the promised land.
All glory be to God, Creator blest,
To Jesus Christ, God’s love made manifest,
And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter,
All glory be, both now and evermore.
Ant. Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus said to him: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart.
Intercessions
The world was created by the Word of God, re-created by his redemption, and it is continually renewed by his love. Rejoicing in him, we call out:
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
We give thanks to God whose power is revealed in nature and whose providence is revealed in history.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
Through your Son, the herald of reconciliation, the victor of the cross,
free us from empty fear and hopelessness.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
May all those who love and pursue justice
work together without deceit to build a world of true peace.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
Be with the oppressed, free the captives, console the sorrowing, feed the hungry, strengthen the weak. In all people reveal the victory of your cross.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers, that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.
Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer!
After your Son’s death and burial, you raised him up again in glory. Grant that the faithful departed may live with him.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer! (4)
The Lord’s Prayer
And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
Closing Prayer
God, our Father,
Your light of truth
guides us to the way of Christ.
May all who follow him
reject what is contrary to the Gospel.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Blessing
While making the sign of the cross:
May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Salve Regina (5)
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
Pray for us.
Sant’Angelo,
Pray for us.
Let us spend this evening in peace.
Thanks be to God.
