Call to Worship
While making the sign of the cross:
God, come to our assistance.
Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!
Hymn
Open my Eyes (2)
Open my eyes, Lord.
Help me to see Your face.
Open my eyes, Lord.
Help me to see.
Open my ears, Lord.
Help me to hear Your voice.
Open my ears, Lord.
Help me to hear.
Open my heart, Lord.
Help me to love like You.
Open my heart, Lord.
Help me to love.
And the first shall be last.
And our eyes are opened.
And we'll hear like never before.
And we'll speak in new ways.
And we'll see God's face in places we've never known.
I live within You.
Deep in Your heart, oh love.
I live within You.
Rest now in me.
PSALMODY
Psalm 141:1-9
Ant. Like burning incense, O Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.
I have called to you, O Lord; hasten to help me!
Hear my voice when I cry to you.
Let my prayer arise before you like incense,
the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.
Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips!
Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,
to evil deeds with those who are sinners.
Never allow me to share in their feasting.
If the good strike or reprove me, it is kindness;
but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.
Let my prayer be ever against their malice.
Their princes were thrown down by the side of the rock:
Then, they understood that my words were kind.
As a millstone is shattered to pieces on the ground,
so their bones were strewn at the mouth of the grave.
To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:
In you, I take refuge; spare my soul!
From the trap they have laid for me, keep me safe:
keep me from the snares of those who do evil.
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen
Ant. Like burning incense, O Lord, let my prayer rise up to you.
Psalm Prayer
Lord,
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
your name is worthy of all praise.
Let our prayer come like incense before you.
May the lifting up of our hands
be as an evening sacrifice
acceptable to you,
Lord, our God.
Psalm 111
Ant. We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, the lamb without blemish.
With my whole heart
I praise the Lord among the just.
Great are God's works, a delight to explore.
In splendor, in majesty, God's justice will stand.
Who can forget God's wonders!
A God, merciful and kind
who nourished the faithful,
upheld the covenant,
and revealed mighty deeds,
giving them the land of pagans.
Faithful, just, and true are all God's decrees:
each law in its place,
valid for ever.
The Lord redeems the faithful,
decrees a lasting covenant.
Holy and awesome is God's name!
Fear of the Lord is wisdom's crown,
wise are those who live by it.
Praise the Lord forever!
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen
Ant. We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, the lamb without blemish.
Canticle
Canticle — 1 Peter 2:21-24
Ant. Ours were the sufferings he bore; ours the torments he endured.
Christ suffered for you
and left you an example
to have you follow in his footsteps.
He did no wrong;
no deceit was found in his mouth.
When he was insulted,
he returned no insult.
When he was made to suffer,
he did not counter with threats.
Instead, he delivered himself up
to the One who judges justly.
In his own body,
he brought your sins to the cross
so that all of us, dead to sin,
could live in accord with God’s will.
By his wounds, you were healed.
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen
Ant. Ours were the sufferings he bore; ours the torments he endured.
Reading
A Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians
(1 Corinthians 9:24-25)
While all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, the award goes to one person. In that case, run so as to win! Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable. I do not run like one who loses sight of the finish line. I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. What I do is discipline my own body and master it, for fear that after having preached to others, I myself should be rejected.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.
Responsory
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Christ Jesus, hear our humble petitions,
for we have sinned against you.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
Listen to us, O Lord, and have mercy, for we have sinned against you.
Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Mary
Luke 1:46-55
Ant. Whoever drinks the water that I shall give will never be thirsty again, says the Lord.
While making the sign of the cross:
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for God has looked with favor on this lowly servant.
From this day, all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is God’s Name.
God has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
God has shown the strength of his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
God has cast down the mighty from their thrones
and has lifted up the lowly.
God has filled the hungry with good things
and has sent the rich away empty.
God has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for God has remembered the promise of mercy,
the promise made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Glory to Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen.
Ant. Whoever drinks the water that I shall give will never be thirsty again, says the Lord.
Intercessions
All praise to God the Father, who brought his chosen people to rebirth from imperishable seeds through his eternal Word. As God’s children, we cry out:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
God of mercy, hear the prayers we offer for all your people; may they hunger for your word as they do for bodily food.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
Give us a sincere and active love for our own nation and for all humankind; may we work always to build a world of peace and goodness.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
Look with love on all to be reborn in baptism, that they may be living stones in your temple of the Spirit.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
You moved Nineveh to repentance by the preaching of Jonah. In your mercy, touch the hearts of sinners by the preaching of your word.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers, that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.
Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy.
Grant to the dead the glory of resurrection,
and give us a share in their happiness.
Cry out for God’s mercy:
Hear, O Lord, enfold us in your mercy. (2)
The Lord’s Prayer
And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
Closing Prayer
God of all compassion, Father of all goodness,
To heal the wounds our sins and selfishness bring upon us you bid us turn to fasting, prayer, and sharing with our brothers and sisters. We acknowledge our sinfulness. Our guilt is ever before us: when our weakness causes discouragement, let your compassion fill us with hope and lead us through a Lent of repentance to the beauty of Easter joy. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Blessing
While making the sign of the cross:
May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
