Liturgy of the Hours
Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer for the
Feast of St. Albert of Jerusalem,
Bishop & Lawgiver of Carmel

Call to Worship

While making the sign of the cross:

Lord, open my lips.
And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

For All the Saints (1)

For all the saints who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou, in the darkness dread, their one true light.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

But, then there breaks a still more glorious day;
the saints, triumphant, rise in bright array;
the King of Glory passes on his way.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
in praise of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Alleluia! Alleluia!

PSALMODY

Psalm 63

Ant. Lord, grant us wisdom so that we may ponder your law in our minds and keep it always in our hearts.

O God, you are my God, for you I long;
for you, my soul is thirsting.
My body pines for you
like a dry, weary land without water.
So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,
my lips will speak your praise.
So I will bless you all my life;
in your name, I will lift up my hands.
My soul shall be filled as with a banquet;
my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed, I remember you.
On you, I muse through the night,
for you have been my help;
in the shadow of your wings, I rejoice.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand holds me fast.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning
is now and will be forever.
Amen.

Ant. Lord, grant us wisdom so that we may ponder your law in our minds and keep it always in our hearts.

Psalm Prayer

Father, creator of unfailing light, give that same light to those who call to you. May our lips praise you, our lives proclaim your goodness, our works give you honor, and our voices celebrate you for ever.

Psalm 149

Ant. This way is holy and good: walk in it.

Sing a new song to the Lord,
God’s praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel rejoice in its maker.
Let the people of Zion exult in their king.
Let them praise God’s name with dancing
and make music with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord takes delight in his people
and crowns the poor with salvation.

Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,
shout for joy and take their rest.
Let the praise of God be on their lips
and a two-edged sword in their hand,

to deal out vengeance to the nations
and punishment on all the peoples;
to bind their kings in chains
and their nobles in fetters of iron;
to carry out the sentence pre-ordained;
this honor is for all God’s faithful

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning
is now and will be forever.
Amen.

Ant. This way is holy and good: walk in it.

Reading

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy
(Dt 6:4-7)

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart, and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Take a few moments to reflect on the reading.

Responsory

On the two commandments of love, the law and the prophets depend.
On the two commandments of love, the law and the prophets depend.
The law of the Lord is perfect; it delights the soul.
The law and the prophets depend.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
On the two commandments of love, the law and the prophets depend.

Gospel Canticle
Canticle of Zechariah

Luke 1:68-79
The Benedictus (2)

Ant. O worthy man, our lawgiver, because you kept the law of God deep in your heart, you could open wonderful treasures of wisdom to us.

While making the sign of the cross:

Blest be the Lord, the God of Israel
Who brings the dawn and darkest night dispels,
Who raises up a mighty Savior from the earth,
Of David’s line, a son of royal birth.

The prophets tell a story just begun
Of vanquished foe and glorious vict’ry won,
Of promise made to all who keep the law as guide:
God’s faithful love and mercy will abide.

This is the oath once sworn to Abraham:
All shall be free to dwell upon the land,
Free now to praise, unharmed by the oppressor’s rod,
Holy and righteous in the sight of God.

And you, my child, this day you shall be called
The promised one, the prophet of our God,
For you will go before the Lord to clear the way,
And shepherd all into the light of day.

The tender love God promised from our birth
Is soon to dawn upon this shadowed earth,
To shine on those whose sorrows seem to never cease,
To guide our feet into the path of peace.

All glory be to God, Creator blest,
To Jesus Christ, God’s love made manifest,
And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter,
All glory be, both now and evermore.

Ant. O worthy man, our lawgiver, because you kept the law of God deep in your heart, you could open wonderful treasures of wisdom to us.

Intercessions

Let us give praise to Christ, who loves his people and is the shepherd and guardian of our souls. Let us place our hope in him as we sing:
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

Lord, accept our vows and petitions, the first offerings of our day.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

Lord, may we be so inspired by our Rule, that our lives proclaim your love before all.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

May we so love you, who are Love itself, that we may come to possess you; may we so live that our whole life praises you.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

Help us, who are your servants, to keep your word faithfully; and to seek it with all our hearts.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

Lord, be our teacher and guide, leading the way for us to the heights of Carmel; — may we be bound to your service with a pure heart and a clean conscience.
O God, hear us, hear our prayer.

For the sick who have asked us to accompany them with our prayers that they may experience your merciful and healing touch today.

Please pray aloud the names of those who are sick or in need of healing.

O God, hear us, hear our prayer. (3)

The Lord’s Prayer

And now let us pray with confidence as Christ our Lord asked:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

Closing Prayer

Lord God,
Through Saint Albert of Jerusalem,
you have given us a Rule of life
according to your Gospel
to help us attain perfect love.
Through his prayers, may we always live
in allegiance to Jesus Christ,
and serve faithfully until death
him who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Blessing

While making the sign of the cross:

May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
